The Heart Behind the Book
My “Why” for Writing Write With Confidence
It’s officially release day for Write With Confidence, and I’ll be honest—writing a nonfiction book was never something on my bucket list.
As a fiction writer, I’ve dreamed of the many novels I hope to publish in my lifetime. But writing a nonfiction book—especially one about writing—was never something I planned to do. But now that I have, I’m incredibly excited to share this with you all.
For anyone who doesn’t know, my book coaching business began in 2020 during the COVID lockdown when I was six months pregnant with my son. Like many, the pause from the daily rat race gave me a chance to slow down and decide if how I’d been spending my time truly aligned with my values and vision for my life. At that time, I’d been struggling to get my coaching business off the ground because I wasn’t sure what niche I wanted to serve. I wanted to help people, but without a specific niche, it was hard to know who my ideal clients were.
And then one day a thought came to my mind: what I really want to do is help writers write their books. And then, my next thought: well then, why don’t I do that?
It seems almost unbelievable to me looking back that this thought hadn’t crossed my mind before. I had training and experience in mental health counseling and coaching, and I’d been studying writing craft almost my entire life. It made perfect sense to combine the two, but imposter syndrome had led me to believe previously that I wasn’t qualified to do this. But in that one moment, my perspective shifted. I was no longer looking at why I couldn’t pursue this as a career and began recognizing all the reasons I could.
And when I thought about what I wanted this book coaching journey to look like, I knew that I wanted my work to be about more than just teaching writers how to write a good story. In the many writing communities I was a part of, I saw a recurring theme: writers sharing their writing struggles that appeared to be about technical aspects of juggling schedules and a need to learn more about the craft of writing—but reading between the lines, I suspected these struggles had more to do with the writer getting in their own way. I suspected the root cause of many of these writers’ issues had less to do with any lack of writing ability and more to do with self-limiting beliefs holding them back from chasing their dream. Just like my own self-limiting beliefs had held me back from believing I could be a good book coach for so long.
As I began to build up my book coaching business, I leaned into the idea that mindset issues were holding writers back from achieving their dreams. And the more writers I worked with, the more I realized that this hypothesis was true. Most of my clients evidenced self-limiting beliefs that were sabotaging their writing progress in one way or another. And as we worked through those beliefs, their writing lives became easier.
So, while I never intended to write a book about writing mindset, I began to see that this was a book writers need. If through this book I can help more writers recognize that their struggles may not be about a lack of talent but a mindset that is sabotaging them, then the time and effort I poured into it will be more than worth it.
If you’ve dreamed of writing a book but something keeps holding you back, this book is for you. If you keep telling yourself “one day” you’ll write a novel, but you can’t start today because [insert reason here], you may be surprised to realize your reasons are nothing more than self-limiting beliefs you’ve been telling yourself for so long you believe them to be fact.
Because the truth is, writing is a learnable skill. If you have the desire and determination to show up and put in the work to improve, you can finish a book. But if you don’t believe you’re capable, your manuscript will remain unfinished.
